I ran across some super creative Dollar Tree Christmas crafting videos on YouTube and thought I would try some for fun. I especially like Holly’s style at Hot Humble Pie. She has such clever ideas and gives some really great hints and techniques to step up our crafty makes.
We have a newer Dollar Tree in my area, so I added it to the tour and hit 3 different stores to see which of the crafty items I could find. I used Holly’s style of farmhouse vintage and the colors of red, green, black and white as inspiration, which really helped me narrow down what to buy.
And I got brave and cut apart and painted different pieces like Holly does – definitely new to me. Like cutting off the wire edges and trimming ribbon in half to make more rustic narrow ribbon. She had lots of tips about how to paint with white as a base, then adding browns and mossy greens to make wood and plastic pieces look like worn wood and metal. She also taught me how to make a “messy bow” – layered ribbon, fabric, lace, mesh scraps tied with a little twine – so cute!
I crafted this little vignette with one of the wooden trays painted and layered with scrapbook paper and gold glitter. I made my scene with a church ornament and a mini tree wrapped in white batting for snow. Then I topped it all with a messy bow including strips of Dollar Tree fabric, mesh, lace and ribbon to add lots of texture.
For the little wreath plaque, I “stained” a little Dollar Tree wood pallet with watered down tan paint, then added vintage looking scrapbook paper. Then I crafted a sweet wreath using the Dollar Tree greenery garland ties – they come in a pack of twelve 12 inch pieces! Holly shared a hack of trimming the greenery and then painting on faux snow to give it a high-end look. I wrapped mine with the berries garland and added another messy bow.
To spruce up a couple of Dollar Tree ornaments, I strung them together with a chalkboard heart and wooded snowflake in the middle and added some faux snow painting to the greenery.
Crafting wreaths is not my forte, but Holly inspired me to give it a try. I started with a twig circle form I bought from the Dollar Tree earlier in the year, and hot glued some of the Christmas picks around it. Before gluing, I cut each stem off the main one to get the maximum out of each – one pick had 6 stems, so 2 picks was enough to fill the whole wreath. For some sparkle, I added the “Believe” word, the wired gold pinecone garland, and a big fluffy mesh bow. I think it turned out pretty cute!
This is a 5 x 7 Dollar Tree canvas that I made into a little “painting” using more vintage Christmas scrapbook paper, and edged with sloppy paint and Dollar Tree glittery faux snow. And of course another messy bow – clearly my new favorite!
This last project is my favorite because I finally used a birch tree branch I have been hoarding for years. It worked perfectly as a rustic hanger for three wreaths made from some of the same Dollar Tree finds.
Thank you Holly at Hot Humble Pie for the inspiration to try some new crafty skills. I hope you all can try these too!
