How to Cover Composition Books in 4 Easy Steps!

Here’s a simple Back to School craft to make for the kiddos, or for a pretty cover for your bullet journal – in 4 easy steps!

This version avoids any sticky glue and complicated folding, and is super inexpensive.

Supplies Needed:

1/3 yard Wonder Under

(This is a paper backed fusible web found in the interfacing section of fabrics. I found it at Walmart for $1.66 per yard.)

1 Fat Quarter or 1/3 yard Fabric

Composition Book

Step 1:

Cut the fabric and Wonder Under 17 x 11 inches.

Step 2:

Iron the Wonder Under to the fabric, following the manufacturer’s directions. Peel off the paper backing.

Step 3:

Iron the fabric/web onto the book.

Position the book onto the fabric/web so it will wrap around and cover the entire front and back. With the book closed, iron the fabric/web onto the front cover with a hot dry iron, moving the iron every 6-8 seconds until completely fused. Wrap the remaining fabric snugly around the spine and onto the back of the book and iron. Place the book (still closed) with the spine hanging off the ironing board and iron the spine.

Step 4:

Cut the fabric along the edge of the book.

Voila! Now you have a fabulous crafty book that will make you smile each time you use it.

Tips for Success:

Be sure to avoid getting any webbing onto your iron and ironing board by aligning it carefully onto the fabric and book.

When you iron the webbing onto the fabric, it’s okay to have a few little wrinkles – they disappear after you take off the paper backing.

You can actually cover two books with one fat quarter or 1/3 yard of fabric – two for the price of one!

When cutting the fabric along the edge, cut exactly at the edge of the cardboard with smooth, long cuts using fabric scissors. You can also use a rotary cutter and mat for smooth cutting – just be sure not to cut into the cardboard!

If you can see the writing on the book through light fabric, you can paint the cover and back with white acrylic paint and let dry before covering.
