Zipped Pouch – Sewing to Sell Project #2

This is the second project in a series using the patterns in Virginia Lindsay’s book, “Sewing to Sell.” It has great crafty sewing projects and inspiration for taking your sewing creativity to the next level.

Project #2 Zipped Pouch
I decided to try the Zipped Pouch because I was looking for a last-minute hostess gift, and I thought it has a great combination of cute and useful. And by using fun fabrics with gold accents along with a cream canvas and a metallic gold zipper, it will have a great stylish look.

I made mine a little smaller using a 7-inch zipper, and I added a strap to make it a wristlet. But the basic directions are the same. Virginia also has a great suggestion to make a matching set in three sizes.

I little hint for sewing along a zipper, especially a bulky metal type, is to move the zipper pull most of the way to the bottom, away from where you are sewing. Then when you’ve sewn about halfway, carefully move the zipper pull up to the top. Then the it’s out of the way to finish sewing.

Another hint – that I did not do on this example but wished I remembered – is to tack the opening end of the zipper together with a few stitches before sewing it onto the pouch fabric. That way it closes all the way and doesn’t leave a little bit of open zipper where the ends don’t touch.

I think this little pouch turned out super cute and I plan to make a few more with the rest of the fabric I purchased. Maybe I’ll even keep one for myself!

I hope you enjoy this sewing series using “Sewing to Sell” by Virginia Lindsay – next up, Great Big Tote, project #3!

Thank you! The right fabric really makes a difference and I got lucky with this combination.
